We are delighted to be supporting the Great School Libraries campaign, which aims to ensure that every child has access to high-quality school libraries. The three-year initiative, spearheaded by CILIP: The library and information association, The School Libraries Group (SLG) and School Library Association (SLA), launched in September 2018 and will use research and evidence, public campaigning and lobbying to build towards greater national recognition and support for school libraries.

At Achievement for All, we recognise and champion the unique role that school and public libraries have to play in closing the literacy gap and are calling for increased awareness of the importance of libraries in early years and beyond in our Every Child Included in Education Manifesto supported by a wide-range of organisations and individuals across education, third sector, policy and business.

Speaking about the campaign, Professor Sonia Blandford, CEO at Achievement for All, said: “We whole-heartedly support the Great School Libraries campaign. Since the 1850 Public Libraries Act, libraries have provided communities with amazing social and cultural spaces where anyone and everyone, regardless of background, challenge or need, could read, learn, reflect and question.

“School and public libraries continue to deliver vibrant programmes of activities, reading clubs and events to get children excited about reading, and yet in recent years, many have closed or access reduced. It is imperative that we work to reverse this trend if we want to improve literacy, build brighter futures for children and inspire a generation of lifetime readers.”

The Great School Libraries Campaign working group will be aiming to engage all potential stakeholders – whether that’s school library staff, parents, and school leadership or decision makers in government.

To help meet their campaign objective, the organisers are calling for schools to take part in discussions that will contribute to building the national framework and defining what a ‘Great School Library’ actually is.

Questions include:

  • What makes a great school library?
  • What elements of school librarianship do you think should be in a national framework?
  • What topic do you think would be of interest to you/your school library staff member?
